PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, No Grand Slam
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of play, it's a promising offering.
HB Studios, the developer, has refined its golf gameplay over a decade, evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive real-world course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, are easily overshadowed by the fun factor.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic offers several control options. The right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) is particularly intuitive, offering adjustable difficulty levels. A forgiving "Perfect Swing" mode caters to casual players, while harder settings punish imprecise inputs. Lateral movement on the tee box adds strategic depth. The enhanced ball physics and the option to play as Tiger Woods (the cover athlete) further enhance the experience.
MyCareer mode receives a boost with narrative elements, allowing players to choose a heroic or villainous path, impacting stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that affects stats, alongside upgradeable skills. The addition of weekly refresh Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) provides ongoing goals.
The MyPlayer creator, while not extensively tested, offers sufficient customization. Skill trees add welcome depth. Multiplayer features, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging social interaction, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer accommodates players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 avoids major flaws, excelling in several areas without being groundbreaking in any single aspect. This makes it less sensational, but still a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
