Mobile game updates often improve optimization or compatibility. However, Capcom's recent update for Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village on iOS and iPadOS introduces an unwelcome change: online DRM. This DRM checks purchase history upon game launch, verifying ownership before accessing the title screen. Rejecting the check closes the application. While this process takes only seconds with an internet connection, it renders all three games unplayable offline—a significant drawback for a premium-priced purchase. Before this update, these titles functioned perfectly offline.

I personally confirmed offline functionality prior to the update. Now, the online verification is mandatory. This mandatory online check is a negative development for those who purchased the games, impacting their offline playability. While some players may not be affected, I find this type of post-purchase DRM addition unacceptable. Ideally, Capcom would implement a less intrusive purchase verification method, perhaps checking only periodically rather than on every launch. This update unfortunately makes recommending Capcom's premium iOS ports more difficult.

If you haven't yet purchased these games, free trials are available. You can find Resident Evil 7 biohazard on iOS, iPadOS, and macOS here. Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on the App Store here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews can be found here, here, and here. Do you own these Resident Evil titles on iOS? What are your thoughts on this update?
