The first official trailer for "Rust," the much-anticipated film starring Alec Baldwin, has been released. This movie, set to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025, carries a somber note due to a tragic incident during its production. On October 22, 2021, a prop gun misfired, fatally wounding cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. The incident occurred when Baldwin, who was demonstrating how he would draw his gun, discharged the weapon, which was supposed to be a "cold gun" with no live rounds.
The official synopsis of "Rust" details the story set in the 1880s Kansas. It follows young Lucas McCalister (Patrick Scott McDermott), who, after accidentally killing a rancher, faces the gallows. His fate takes a dramatic turn when his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (played by Alec Baldwin), rescues him from jail. Together, they embark on a perilous journey to Mexico, pursued by U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a relentless bounty hunter known as 'Preacher' (Travis Fimmel).
Following the tragic event, legal proceedings unfolded. Charges against Baldwin were dropped in April 2023, while Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in preparing the gun. First assistant director David Halls, responsible for ensuring the gun was safe, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months of probation.
"Rust" made its initial public appearance at Poland's Camerimage Festival in November 2024, where it paid tribute to Halyna Hutchins during the credits. Although Alec Baldwin did not attend, Joel Souza was present and spoke about Hutchins, emphasizing her love for the festival and her dedication to her craft.
