The much-anticipated film adaptation of the 2012 video game *Sleeping Dogs* might still see the light of day, thanks to efforts from Marvel star Simu Liu. After the project was officially canceled earlier this month, Liu has sparked hope by expressing his commitment to reviving the project. In response to a fan's call on X/Twitter for a movie version of the game, Liu stated he is "working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
Originally announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen slated to star, the film adaptation quickly vanished from the spotlight and was confirmed as canceled just weeks ago by Yen himself. Yen shared his disappointment, noting the extensive effort and personal investment he had put into the project. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"
Just when all hope seemed lost for fans eager to see the Hong Kong-set action franchise continue on the big screen, Liu's social media interaction has rekindled interest. Whether Liu will successfully secure the rights or manage to push the project forward remains uncertain.
*Sleeping Dogs* originally launched on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, captivating players with the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a notorious Triad crime syndicate in Hong Kong. The game was critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 from IGN, but unfortunately, it never received a sequel.
