We're finally getting our first glimpse of what comes after The Rise of Skywalker — though not from Shawn Levy, at least not yet. While the Deadpool & Wolverine director's upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter is highly anticipated, fans will get to explore the post-2019 film era a little sooner thanks to a new young adult novel, Star Wars: The Last Order.
Revealed via Penguin Random House's website, the novel will delve deeper into John Boyega's beloved hero Finn and Naomi Ackie's Resistance fighter Jannah, who debuted in The Rise of Skywalker. Publisher Penguin Random House provided this official synopsis for Kwame Mbalia's book:
“Following the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Resistance intercepts a ship carrying young passengers kidnapped by the First Order. As Finn and Jannah race to track down the responsible First Order officer before he can harm more children, the two former stormtroopers must confront their own complicated pasts as soldiers within the oppressive regime.”
This marks the first Star Wars story set after The Rise of Skywalker, though it wasn't the first such project planned. As for Levy's post-Rise of Skywalker film, it remains firmly on the horizon.
In a February interview with Deadline, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy discussed the project and its place in the Star Wars timeline. "It's set after the first nine films," she explained. "Shawn's standalone Star Wars story takes place about five or six years after Episode IX." Last month, screenwriter Jonathan Tropper reaffirmed his excitement for the film, telling Screen Rant, "I hope it arrives sooner than you think." Days later, the release date was announced at Star Wars Celebration Japan, with Ryan Gosling confirmed to star.

According to Penguin Random House, Star Wars: The Last Order arrives on October 21, 2025. As for Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter, we'll have to wait a bit longer — it's scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
