Earlier this week, Konami delighted fans of classic RPGs with a special live stream dedicated to the Suikoden series. The franchise hasn't seen a new entry since a Japanese and PSP-exclusive side story released over a decade ago, so anticipation was high and expectations varied widely. The announcements that followed stirred a mix of emotions among the fanbase: a Suikoden anime (yay!), and a new Suikoden game for mobile with gacha mechanics (oh no!).
Starting with the anime, titled "Suikoden: The Anime," it's based on the events of Suikoden 2 and marks Konami's first venture into animation production. While we didn't get a deep dive into the visuals or any information on international availability, a brief scenery clip was shared:
This news is thrilling for dedicated Suikoden fans and could serve as an excellent introduction for newcomers if the anime becomes widely accessible.
The second major announcement, however, has sparked mixed feelings. A new game, "Suikoden Star Leap," was revealed, boasting stunning visuals with a style reminiscent of Octopath Traveler—2D sprites set against 3D backgrounds. Set a few years before Suikoden 1 and after Suikoden 5, it retains the series' signature feature of including 108 characters.
However, the game is slated for release on mobile platforms only, which may not sit well with all fans. Adding to the complexity, Star Leap will incorporate gacha mechanics and ongoing monetization, a departure from the series' tradition of premium releases on consoles and PCs. This inclusion raises concerns about whether monetization will hinder players' experience or their ability to collect all 108 characters. We'll have to wait and see how these elements play out.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to the re-releases of Suikoden 1 and 2 in the form of "Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars." A new trailer for this collection was showcased during the live event, and it's set to be released tomorrow, March 6.
