DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This latter shot sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on Superman's unusually still facial expression while his hair and cape moved dramatically. Speculation ranged from technical issues to "wonky CGI."
However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot utilized no CGI on Superman's face. He attributed the perceived stillness to the use of a wide-angle lens at close range. He confirmed that both the Svalbard, Norway location and actor David Corenswet were entirely real elements of the shot.
Despite this explanation, the debate continues, with some comparing the shot to a similar scene featuring Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Nevertheless, excitement for the Superman film remains high.
The film, the first in the DCU's "Chapter One: Gods and Monsters," is slated for release on July 11, 2025. Related articles include analyses of the DC heroes and villains in the trailer, Gunn's comments on Krypto's on-screen personality, and discussions about the film's thematic focus on hope.
