Key members of Hopoo Games, the creators of the acclaimed Risk of Rain series, including co-founders Duncan Drummond and Paul Morse, have transitioned to Valve. This significant move has sparked renewed speculation about future Valve projects.
Hopoo Games' Transition to Valve
Development Hiatus and Project Cancellation
Hopoo Games announced via Twitter (X) that several developers, including its co-founders, are joining Valve's game development team. This has resulted in a temporary halt to Hopoo Games' operations, including the indefinite postponement of their unannounced project, "Snail." While the nature of the transition remains unclear, Drummond and Morse's LinkedIn profiles indicate their continued association with Hopoo Games. The studio expressed gratitude for its decade-long partnership with Valve and excitement for contributing to future Valve titles.
Established in 2012, Hopoo Games achieved recognition with the original Risk of Rain, a popular roguelike. Following the success of its sequel, Risk of Rain 2 (2019), Hopoo Games sold the IP to Gearbox in 2022. Drummond recently voiced confidence in Gearbox's continued development of the franchise, specifically mentioning the recent Risk of Rain 2: Seekers of the Storm DLC.
Valve's Deadlock and the Persistent Half-Life 3 Rumors
While Valve hasn't revealed the specific projects Hopoo Games will contribute to, the ongoing early access of their hero shooter, Deadlock, remains a prominent focus. However, the news has fueled long-standing speculation about a potential Half-Life 3.
This speculation intensified after a voice actor briefly listed a mysterious "Project White Sands" linked to Valve in their portfolio. Although quickly removed, the mention ignited fan theories, with some suggesting a connection between "White Sands" and Half-Life 3, referencing the Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico, a key location in the Half-Life series. Eurogamer reported on the ensuing fan discussions and theories.
