Sonic Fan-Made Game Has Serious Sonic Mania Vibes

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, a fan-made title from Starteam, evokes the spirit of Sonic Mania, capturing the charm of classic Sonic gameplay and pixel art. This homage to the beloved 2017 title satisfies fans yearning for a continuation of that specific style. The game's active community continually produces sequels and updates, and Sonic Mania, a 25th-anniversary celebration, remains a series favorite.

While a true Sonic Mania sequel never materialized (due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' other pursuits), 2023's Sonic Superstars offered a 2D successor with updated 3D graphics and co-op. However, the enduring appeal of Sonic Mania's pixel art persists, inspiring fan projects like Sonic and the Fallen Star, and now, Sonic Galactic.

In development for at least four years (first showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo), Sonic Galactic imagines a 32-bit Sonic game for 5th-generation consoles—a "what-if" Sega Saturn scenario. It successfully blends authentic retro 2D platforming reminiscent of the Genesis era with unique additions.

What Makes Sonic Galactic Unique?

The second demo, released in early 2025, features the classic trio (Sonic, Tails, Knuckles) in new zones. Joining them are Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) seeking Eggman's revenge, and the Illusion Island native, Tunnel the Mole.

Mirroring Sonic Mania's structure, each character boasts unique paths within each zone. The special stages, clearly inspired by Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a timed 3D environment. A standard playthrough takes roughly an hour to complete Sonic's levels, with other characters having approximately one stage each, resulting in a total playtime of a couple of hours.
