AI Performances Deemed 'Dead End' by Nicolas Cage

by Audrey Feb 26,2025

Nicolas Cage has issued a stark warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He believes robots are incapable of capturing the complexities of the human condition.

During his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage used the platform to voice his concerns about AI's encroachment on the art of acting. He emphasized the importance of human creativity and emotional depth in performance, qualities he argues AI cannot replicate.

"Robots cannot reflect the human condition for us," Cage stated. He warned that allowing AI to even slightly manipulate a performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and truth of artistic expression, replacing it with mere financial gain. He stressed the crucial role of art in mirroring the human experience, a process requiring genuine human thought and emotion – elements he believes AI lacks. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI interference, preserving authentic and honest performances.

Cage's stance echoes similar concerns raised by other actors, particularly in the voice acting industry, where AI has been used to recreate entire performances, even in major video games. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have publicly criticized AI's impact on their profession, highlighting the threat to their livelihoods.

The filmmaking community is also divided on the issue. While director Tim Burton expressed deep unease about AI-generated art, Zack Snyder advocated for embracing AI's potential in filmmaking.
