Breakout Beyond Puts a New Angle on Atari's Classic Brick-Breaker

by George Mar 15,2025

Breakout, the iconic 1976 arcade classic, is getting a modern makeover nearly 50 years later. Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions (the minds behind the BIT.TRIP series), puts a fresh spin on the familiar brick-breaking gameplay. Instead of the traditional vertical descent, the action unfolds horizontally, with players moving left to right, smashing bricks as they go. The core paddle-and-ball mechanics remain, but the sideways progression introduces a dynamic new challenge.

As combos build, the visual spectacle intensifies with dazzling lights and effects. Special bricks trigger spectacular events, from massive explosions to a powerful laser cannon. Breakout Beyond boasts 72 levels, plus an unlockable endless mode complete with an online global leaderboard for competitive play. For those who prefer collaborative brick-busting, local two-player co-op is also available.

PlayInitially slated as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development was ultimately completed by Atari following their acquisition of the game's rights.

"We're thrilled to bring this gem to our players," stated Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing. "The team saw a brilliant concept—preserving the core Breakout experience while completely reinventing the formula. Breakout Beyond is a worthy addition to the Breakout legacy, and we eagerly anticipate the incredible combos players will create."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with a projected 2020 release, remains unreleased, facing numerous setbacks and delays over the years. Atari acquired the Intellivision branding and rights last year, but not the Amico console itself.

Breakout Beyond launches later this year on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS.
