Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Was Made Out of Boredom
Doing Something Different
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has quickly become an instant classic, achieving the highest ratings of 2025 and selling over 1 million copies in just three days. Remarkably, this game-of-the-year contender was sparked by boredom and a yearning for something new.
In an interview with BBC News on May 4, the team at Sandfall Interactive shared the origins of their groundbreaking project. Director Guillaume Broche explained that the game was initially conceived as a way to alleviate his restlessness while working at Ubisoft during the peak of the 2020 pandemic. Inspired by his lifelong love for the Final Fantasy series, Broche embarked on a mission to create a similar JRPG experience, beginning his journey on Reddit.
A Stroke of Luck
To bring his vision to life, Broche reached out on Reddit and various online forums, seeking collaborators for his Belle Époque-inspired turn-based game. Despite initial skepticism about the concept, Broche's persistence paid off.
During lockdown in Australia, Jennifer Svedberg-Yen stumbled upon Broche's Reddit post seeking voice actors. Intrigued by the opportunity, she submitted an audition and was initially cast as a major character. Her role soon evolved, and she became the lead writer for Expedition 33.
Broche eventually left Ubisoft to focus entirely on Expedition 33, founding Sandfall Interactive. With funding from publisher Kepler Interactive, the team grew to about 30 members, many of whom were recruited through unconventional means, like composer Lorien Testard, who connected via Soundcloud.
With Kepler Interactive's backing, the team attracted renowned actors such as Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Ben Starr (Final Fantasy XVI), Jennifer English (Baldur’s Gate 3), and Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings).
Despite the expanding team, Broche and Svedberg-Yen emphasized their versatility, taking on multiple roles during production. Svedberg-Yen, for instance, handled translations in various languages. Broche praised the team, noting, "We have, I think, an amazing team mostly of junior people but they are so incredibly invested in the project and talented."
The enchanting origins of Expedition 33 mirror the magic of the game itself. Driven by boredom and serendipity, Sandfall Interactive crafted a timeless game destined to be enjoyed for generations.
