Explore Assassin’s Creed Shadows' Open World: When Can You Start?

by Joshua May 18,2025

*Assassin’s Creed Shadows* offers players an expansive open world set in the captivating backdrop of Feudal Japan. Yet, the freedom to roam this vast landscape isn't immediate. Here's when you can start exploring the open world in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows*.

How Long is the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Prologue?

Ubisoft is renowned for its intricate open worlds, but it's also known for extended prologues that precede the open-world exploration. Fortunately, *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* offers a more concise introduction before players can delve into Japan.

The game kicks off with a prologue that sets the scene and introduces the dual protagonists, Yasuke and Naoe, representing the Samurai and Shinobi respectively. This segment immerses players in Iga, Naoe's homeland, and launches her journey beyond its borders. Brimming with cinematic set pieces and narrative exposition, the prologue is estimated to take around an hour and a half to complete.

Once you've completed the "From Spark to Flame" Quest and established your Kakurega (Hideout) at Tomiko's Homestead, the vast open world becomes yours to explore.

Can You Go Anywhere in Assassin’s Creed Shadows Right Away?

Naoe prepares to observe an area after synchronizing in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, via UbisoftUpon gaining access to the open world, players find themselves in Izumi Settsu, one of the nine regions available at the game's launch. Initially, quests and activities will be centered around this area, gradually expanding to the north into the Yamashiro province.

While certain story-driven missions may tether Naoe and Yasuke to specific locations, it's theoretically possible to venture into other provinces. However, two primary factors might discourage early exploration:

The first is the absence of quests and meaningful activities in these regions until they unlock as part of the story progression. Additionally, *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* incorporates RPG elements, requiring players to reach a certain level before they can effectively engage in combat in these areas. The map displays regions with a red diamond and a number, signaling that players are significantly under-leveled for that region. Attempting to explore these areas prematurely could lead to a frustrating experience, as enemies might be able to defeat you swiftly.

In summary, while you can technically visit regions intended for higher-level players, it's generally not advisable as it may result in an unnecessarily challenging and less enjoyable experience.
