Insider: MultiVersus is on the verge of shutting down: Warner Bros. fighting game lost 99% of its players

The future of MultiVersus hangs in the balance, with Season 5 potentially being its final chapter. This ominous prediction comes from AusilMV, a reputable games leaker, citing an inside source. The source claims Season 5 is a last-gasp attempt to revive the game's flagging fortunes. While currently just a rumor, the situation is undeniably precarious.

The game's initial launch in 2022 saw meteoric success, peaking at 153,000 concurrent Steam players. However, a dramatic 99% player drop followed swiftly, leading Warner Bros. Games to pull the plug in June 2023, retroactively classifying the launch as an "open beta test." A relaunch with updates in May 2024 failed to recapture its former glory.

Season 5, commencing in early February, represents a make-or-break moment for the developers. This relaunched version, cleverly disguised as a "beta" from the initial 2022 release, initially captivated players. However, the surprise announcement of a temporary shutdown in March 2023, followed by the actual closure in June, left many, including premium edition purchasers, feeling disillusioned. The success or failure of Season 5 will ultimately determine the fate of MultiVersus.
