NetEase Games' Controversial Layoffs Despite Marvel Rivals' Success

NetEase Games recently laid off US-based developers working on the successful mobile game, Marvel Rivals, sparking controversy within the industry. This strategic shift by NetEase impacts its North American studios.

On February 19, 2025, Thaddeus Sasser, the game's director, announced on LinkedIn that he and other California-based developers had been laid off. This news came as a shock, given Marvel Rivals' recent success. Sasser highlighted the team's significant contribution to launching a new and highly successful franchise. Despite the setback, he's proactively using LinkedIn to help his former colleagues find new employment opportunities, showcasing their skills and experience. He specifically highlighted Garry McGee, the game's technical designer, praising his skills and recommending him highly.

Marvel Rivals was developed collaboratively by teams in China and Seattle. While Sasser's team focused on game and level design, the Chinese team handled other aspects of development. The layoff raises questions about NetEase's broader strategy in North America. Reports suggest a potential withdrawal from the region, citing NetEase's previous actions, including withdrawing funding from Worlds Untold and ending its partnership with Jar of Sparks.

Despite the layoffs, Marvel Rivals continues to receive updates. The second half of Season 1, announced on February 19, 2025 via the game's YouTube channel, introduces new heroes (The Thing and Human Torch, completing the Fantastic Four), a new map (Central Park, featuring Dracula's castle), balance adjustments, and tournaments. Creative director Guangguang and lead combat designer Zhiyong spearheaded this update.

Significant balance changes are planned, including adjustments to ultimate recharge speeds for certain characters and modifications to the survivability of various Vanguard characters. A planned rank reset was announced but later reversed due to player feedback.
