Marvel Snap Publisher Switches to Skystone

Second Dinner Parts Ways with Nuverse, Partners with Skystone Games Following Marvel Snap App Store Removal

Following the unexpected removal of Marvel Snap from app stores in the wake of Bytedance's TikTok ban, developer Second Dinner has severed ties with its publisher, Nuverse. The studio announced a new partnership with US-based publisher Skystone Games via its official Twitter account.

This move concludes a turbulent period for several titles published by Nuverse and other Bytedance subsidiaries, including Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Marvel Snap, which were caught in the crossfire of the recent TikTok ban. Bytedance's actions, seemingly aimed at preventing the loss of its popular app, led to a pledge from then-president-elect Donald Trump to reinstate service.

This marked a significant shift from Trump's previous attempts to ban TikTok. While TikTok's restoration was swift and relatively smooth, other Bytedance gaming ventures were less fortunate. Second Dinner, for example, received no prior notice of Marvel Snap's removal and spent weeks striving to restore the game's availability.

The Fallout for Nuverse

Second Dinner's decision to leave Nuverse is unsurprising. The abrupt and unannounced disruption caused by Bytedance's actions likely alienated many developers. The swiftness of this partnership change suggests significant internal repercussions for Nuverse.

While geopolitical factors are relevant, a more pressing question is whether Bytedance's aggressive efforts to protect TikTok have inadvertently undermined its ambitious gaming plans. Second Dinner's actions strongly suggest this is the case.
