Nintendo Switch 2's GameChat feature is set to enhance the social aspect of gaming, coming pre-installed on all new consoles and highlighted as a pivotal component of the system. However, setting up GameChat requires a key step: users must verify their identity with Nintendo by providing a phone number. If your Nintendo Account already has a linked phone number, you can use that. Once provided, Nintendo will send a text message to that number, effectively linking your GameChat activity to it. It's a reminder to keep things friendly and appropriate!
For younger players, there's an additional layer of security. If you're under 16, GameChat will be inaccessible until a parent or guardian enables it through the Parental Controls app on their smart device. They'll also need to submit their own phone number for verification. This policy seems to apply to all Nintendo Account users on the Switch 2, even if the console is shared among multiple players. We're awaiting official confirmation from Nintendo on this.
Accessing GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2
Activating GameChat is straightforward. Just press the new 'C' button on any of the Switch 2 controllers, and you're ready to connect. You can video chat with up to four friends or join an audio call with up to 24 others. For video calls, you'll need a camera peripheral, available separately, which allows you to broadcast yourself and your gameplay. This marks Nintendo's first foray into offering such a service, bringing them up to speed with other console manufacturers in the online gaming space.

Recent insights from Digital Foundry have shed light on the technical aspects of GameChat on the Switch 2. They've revealed that GameChat could have a notable impact on system resources, raising concerns among developers. Nintendo has equipped developers with a GameChat testing tool that simulates API latency and L3 cache misses, allowing them to test game performance without needing an active GameChat session. This suggests that GameChat might affect game performance, though the extent of this impact remains to be seen until the console launches on June 5.
As a reminder, GameChat will be free for the first 10 months following the Switch 2's release. Post-March 31, 2026, a Nintendo Switch Online membership will be required to continue using the feature. In other news, we've recently seen the first look at a Switch 2 game cartridge and heard rumors that Samsung is interested in providing OLED screens for a potential Switch 2 upgrade.
