Some users appear to have obtained early access to the Nintendo Switch 2 console despite Nintendo's security measures. However, eager fans hoping for leaks face disappointment - not only does the console reportedly require a day-one patch to function, but the revealing video was promptly hit with a copyright strike.
Early Look at Switch 2 Hardware
An eight-second YouTube clip, viewed by IGN before its removal, showed what appeared to be genuine Switch 2 packaging being opened to reveal the plastic-wrapped console. Though brief, the footage presented convincing details, and the rapid copyright claim by Web Capio (an anti-piracy firm) lends credibility to its authenticity.
The original poster, user Ali Almarzooqi, claims the hardware remains locked until a June 5 update:
"Nintendo locked the Switch 2 – it needs an update to function, so I'm waiting for June 5th to unlock it"
Deals tracker Wario64 later reported a second individual claiming Switch 2 ownership. This person allegedly encountered a system message when attempting to play a Switch 1 game: "Please connect to the internet and update your system."
Genuine or Elaborate Hoax?
While these could potentially be sophisticated fakes, their legitimacy may soon be confirmed if either user provides a full unboxing or shares the mandatory update message. Until then, these snippets may represent our only unofficial glimpse of Nintendo's next-gen console before launch.
With the June 5 release approaching, official updates from Nintendo remain our primary source. Recent reveals include hands-on impressions of Mario Kart World, backwards compatibility enhancements for Switch 1 titles, variable refresh rate specifications, and GameChat's phone verification requirements. Despite record pre-order demand, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser assures sufficient holiday stock availability.
