Niku Games has officially released The Palace on the Hill in its full version. Development started back in 2020, and following several years of dedicated work, the game is now available on mobile. This slice-of-life rural adventure delivers a meaningful yet cosy experience.
The Palace on the Hill blends story, culture, and gameplay
The story is set in a fictional rural Indian village during the 1990s and centers on Vir, a young boy whose life is shaped by ambition, struggle, and friendship.
Living in a small village dominated by the ruins of an ancient 15th-century palace, Vir discovers that exploring its forgotten halls is just as important as tending to his everyday life.
Players take on tasks like running errands, gardening, cooking authentic Indian snacks, and managing a tea stall. In parallel, they can uncover stories from more than 25 unique local characters.
Players can also collect references to craft art inspired by traditional Indian miniature paintings. The game’s art direction itself is especially striking.
Every inch of the game is meticulously hand-painted in watercolour. These soft, warm visuals draw you into villages, palace ruins, and other hidden spots. You can take a first look at the game here.
On the gameplay front, it adopts a laid-back, open-world style that draws clear influence from popular farming and life simulation titles.
However, The Palace on the Hill grounds its mechanics deeply in Indian village culture. Daily activities like hugging cows, foraging for herbs, and preparing regional dishes tie directly into the setting and story. Even managing your tea shop blends smoothly with exploration.
What are your thoughts?
The narrative is a core aspect of the experience, weaving together themes of marginalization and ambition while keeping an uplifting, feel-good tone. It presents a moving story of determination and community that avoids becoming overly sentimental.
Lifelike village layouts and natural character interactions are backed by an equally powerful soundtrack. The music is composed by Srikant Krishna, with art direction handled by Mala Sen. They, along with programmer Mridul Kashatria, form the small indie team behind Niku Games Studio.
The Palace on the Hill is free to play and available now on the Google Play Store.
