Palworld Developer Pocketpair Moves Into Publishing to Release Tales of Kenzera Dev's Next Game

by Zoe Feb 28,2025

Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld, expands into publishing, partnering with Surgent Studios for a new horror title.

Pocketpair Publishing, a newly established branch of Pocketpair, announced on X/Twitter its first publishing venture: a unique horror game from Surgent Studios, the creators of Tales of Kenzera: Zau. This new project will be a standalone title, unrelated to the Tales of Kenzera universe.

Surgent Studios CEO, Abubakar Salim, explained the collaboration, stating that the game will be a short, unconventional horror experience based on observed industry trends. He emphasized the shared risk-taking approach between both studios. While future projects within the Tales of Kenzera universe are under discussion, this upcoming game will serve as a distinct project, marking a transition point for Surgent Studios. No release date or title has been revealed. This project is separate from Surgent Studios' previously announced Project Uso.

Pocketpair Publishing is actively seeking proposals from other developers, emphasizing a collaborative approach that respects creative autonomy and avoids dictating game design. John Buckley, Head of Pocketpair Publishing, highlighted the company's commitment to supporting developers and fostering a creative environment. He expressed enthusiasm for partnering with Surgent Studios, praising their originality and passion.

Salim, also known for his acting roles (including Bayek in Assassin's Creed Origins), celebrated the partnership, expressing his hope for a more collaborative and supportive gaming industry in 2025.

Tales of Kenzera: Zau, a Metroidvania game exploring themes of grief and love, received a positive reception (7/10 from IGN), despite facing commercial challenges. Surgent Studios experienced layoffs and funding difficulties earlier this year, making Pocketpair's support particularly significant.

This announcement comes as Pocketpair continues to navigate a patent infringement lawsuit from The Pokémon Company and Nintendo, filed after the remarkable success of Palworld.
