PlayStation Aims to Broaden Family-Oriented Gaming Portfolio
Astro Bot Exceeds 1.5 Million Copies Sold
Astro Bot has achieved remarkable success since its September 2024 launch, selling over 1.5 million copies and earning Game of the Year honors at The Game Awards 2024. This triumph has prompted PlayStation to further explore the family-friendly gaming market.
During Sony's Q3 2025 earnings call, President Hiroki Totoki emphasized Astro Bot's four Game Awards victories (including Best Family Game) alongside Helldivers 2's multiplayer achievements. "These awards in our target expansion genres represent significant progress in diversifying our game portfolio," Totoki stated.
PlayStation's Current Family-Friendly Offerings
While PlayStation maintains a catalog of beloved family franchises, many haven't seen new installments in years. Classics like Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter remain dormant, and properties such as Crash Bandicoot now belong to Xbox. Currently, Ratchet & Clank and LittleBigPlanet represent PlayStation's primary family-oriented franchises, alongside the newly successful Astro Bot.
PlayStation Studios' Hermen Hulst told Famitsu in December 2024: "Astro has become incredibly significant for PlayStation. What's remarkable is how a compact development team created such an impactful title that embodies the PlayStation spirit."
Potential Revival of Classic Franchises
Astro Bot's treatment of nostalgic PlayStation IPs hints at possible revivals. Hulst acknowledged PlayStation's extensive intellectual property library as valuable assets: "We continuously explore ways to utilize our legacy franchises while developing new ones."
The recent Metal Gear Solid Delta trailer featuring Ape Escape references and Sly Cooper's PlayStation Plus popularity demonstrate ongoing fan enthusiasm for these properties, suggesting PlayStation may rejuvenate more classic family-friendly titles.
