Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: How To Catch And Evolve Deino

by Connor Feb 24,2025

This guide details how to obtain and utilize Hydreigon, a powerful Dark/Dragon-type Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Hydreigon, a pseudo-legendary Pokémon, is highly sought after for its impressive stats and capabilities. However, obtaining it requires a bit of effort, as its pre-evolutions, Deino and Zweilous, are exclusive to Pokémon Scarlet.

Acquiring Deino:

Deino and Zweilous can be found in several locations within Pokémon Scarlet: Alfornada Cavern, Dalizapa Passage, Glaseado Mountain, Area Zero, and North Province (Area Two). Alfornada Cavern and Dalizapa Passage may require Koraidon's abilities to navigate. Alternatively, 3-star Tera Raids (unlocked after 3 gym badges) offer a chance to encounter Deino, potentially with its Hidden Ability and a varied Tera Type. Zweilous, Deino's evolution, appears in 4-star Tera Raids. Hydreigon itself can be found in 5/6-star Tera Raids.

Transferring Deino to Pokémon Violet:

Since Deino is Scarlet-exclusive, transferring it to Violet is necessary. This can be achieved through trading via the Union Circle (requires Nintendo Switch Online) or by utilizing Pokémon HOME. Pokémon HOME allows transfers from Pokémon Sword/Shield, Pokémon GO, and Pokémon Scarlet. The process involves moving Deino to your HOME Basic Box, then transferring it to your Pokémon Violet PC Box.

  1. Open Pokémon HOME.
  2. Select your source game (Scarlet, Sword/Shield, or GO).
  3. Move Deino to your Basic Box.
  4. Open Pokémon Violet in HOME.
  5. Transfer Deino from the Basic Box to a PC Box.

Evolving Deino:

Deino evolves into Zweilous at level 50, and Zweilous evolves into Hydreigon at level 64. Auto-battling or using Exp. Candies (especially L and XL) can expedite this process.

Hydreigon's Strengths and Weaknesses:

Hydreigon boasts a 600 base stat total, with exceptional Special Attack and Attack, and good Speed. A Timid or Jolly nature enhances its Speed further. Its Dark/Dragon typing makes it super-effective against Dragon, Ghost, and Psychic types. However, it's quadruply weak to Fairy, and also vulnerable to Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Ice types. It resists Grass, Water, Fire, Electric, Ghost, and Dark moves, and is immune to Ground and Psychic. Terastallizing allows for strategic type changes to mitigate weaknesses or boost offensive capabilities.

Recommended Moveset:

Hydreigon's movepool offers both physical and special options. A special attacker build is often favored, utilizing moves like Nasty Plot, Dragon Pulse (or Draco Meteor), Dark Pulse, and Flash Cannon (Steel-type coverage to counter Fairy weaknesses).

This revised guide provides a comprehensive overview of obtaining and effectively using Hydreigon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Remember to strategize around its type matchups for optimal performance in battles.
