PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not For Long)
As of mid-January 2025, the elusive PlayStation 5 disc drive has reappeared at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon. However, history suggests this restock may be short-lived.
The scarcity stems partly from the launch of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 – the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive – and further exacerbated by the 2024 release of the PS5 Pro, which also lacks a disc drive option. Both the Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a disc drive separately. This has created significant demand, particularly in the US, where supply has been consistently low for months.
While some retailers have managed to restock in early 2025, availability remains limited. As of January 15th, Amazon and PlayStation Direct offered the drive for its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party Walmart seller was also found, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.
Where to Buy (as of January 15th):
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits purchases to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the PS5 Pro's design. The lack of a disc drive option on the Pro forces those wanting both the best performance and physical media compatibility to purchase the drive separately.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still reporting stockouts, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of the scarcity remains uncertain.
