Helldivers 2 Creative Director Dreams of Epic Crossovers, But Prioritizes Game Integrity

Helldivers 2 Collabs with Star Wars, Aliens and Others Desired, But Purposefully Avoided

Johan Pilestedt, creative director of Helldivers 2, recently revealed his wish list for potential game crossovers, sparking excitement among fans. While he expressed enthusiasm for collaborations with franchises like Starship Troopers, Terminator, Warhammer 40,000, Alien, Predator, Star Wars, and even Blade Runner, he cautioned against overwhelming the game's unique identity.

Pilestedt's crossover musings began with a Twitter exchange about the tabletop game, Trench Crusade, which he found appealing. This led to discussions of a potential Helldivers 2/Trench Crusade collaboration, though he acknowledged significant challenges in making such a crossover a reality.

Trench Crusade, a skirmish wargame set in an alternate World War I with warring forces of Heaven and Hell, provided a compelling starting point for the conversation. However, Pilestedt clarified that his dream crossover list, while extensive, represented personal preferences rather than concrete plans. He emphasized the risk of diluting Helldivers 2's satirical, militaristic tone if too many crossovers were implemented. He stated that a deluge of crossovers could transform the experience into something "not Helldivers."

The appeal of crossovers in live-service games is undeniable, and Helldivers 2's intense combat and alien battles seem perfectly suited for such collaborations. Yet, Pilestedt's measured approach highlights a commitment to preserving the game's unique atmosphere. He remains open to both large and small crossover elements – a single weapon or a full character skin – but stresses these remain "personal preferences" with no firm decisions made.

Arrowhead Studios' cautious approach is commendable, particularly given the tendency of some live-service games to overload on crossover content that clashes with the original setting. Pilestedt's prioritization of Helldivers 2's cohesive universe resonates with many players. While the possibility of Super Earth soldiers facing Xenomorphs alongside Jango Fett or the Terminator remains a fascinating hypothetical, the final decision on crossovers rests firmly with the developers. For now, the focus remains on maintaining the integrity of the Helldivers 2 experience.
