The Super Mario Bros. Movie Appears to Have Influenced a Major Mario Kart 9 Character's Redesign

by Aaron Feb 14,2025

Nintendo's recent reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 has sparked discussion among fans, particularly regarding Donkey Kong's redesigned appearance, seemingly influenced by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The trailer showcased numerous characters, most appearing as expected. However, Donkey Kong's noticeably different design stands out. His appearance has remained consistent for years, featuring in titles like Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. The film's successful redesign, though, seems to have inspired Nintendo's updated in-game model.

While the Mario Kart 9 trailer offered only fleeting glimpses of Donkey Kong, the differences are already apparent. A more detailed comparison will be possible later.

Further details are anticipated during the Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct in April. The console reveal trailer provided limited information about the Switch 2 itself, focusing primarily on its aesthetics. However, it confirmed backward compatibility, highlighted a new button on the Joy-Cons, and validated existing theories about using the controller as a mouse.

Despite a 2025 release window, the Nintendo Switch 2 is unlikely to launch before June due to numerous planned hands-on events worldwide, with registration opening shortly.
