Choose between Yasuke or Naoe in Assassin’s Creed Shadows for diverse problem-solving approaches. Discover key details about each tool and how to enhance them in Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Overview of Tools in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Players unlock five unique tools throughout the game, with two becoming available as the story progresses. These tools include:
Grappling Hook
Naoe’s exploration edge over Yasuke comes from the Grappling Hook, enabling attachment to structures and swift climbs without handholds. It’s ideal for scouting enemy positions or reaching high vantage points quickly, even allowing swings across wide gaps.
Kunai
This sharp throwing knife delivers significant damage, perfect for stealthy eliminations. It instantly kills standard enemies, but upgrades are necessary to penetrate the armor of tougher opponents.
Smoke Bomb
The Smoke Bomb creates a disorienting cloud upon impact, serving both defensive and offensive purposes. Use it to evade enemies by breaking their line of sight or to confuse foes in combat, setting up surprise attacks or quick damage.
Shuriken
A classic shinobi throwing star, the Shuriken excels in heavily guarded areas. Though less powerful than the Kunai, it staggers enemies and can trigger environmental effects like disabling alarms or igniting explosive barrels. Upgrades enable ricochet for increased damage.
Shinobi Bell
Ideal for distraction, the Shinobi Bell lures enemies with its sound. Upgrades extend its range and add a golden shimmer to attract more foes, clearing paths or aiding crowd control.

Upgrading Tools in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Most tools, except the Grappling Hook, can be upgraded via the Tools skill tree using Mastery Points. Shuriken, Shinobi Bell, and Smoke Bomb require unlocking before upgrades can be applied.
Grappling Hook
The Grappling Hook’s sole upgrade, Ascension Boost, costs 2 Mastery Points at Knowledge Rank 2 in the Shinobi Tree. It accelerates Naoe’s climbing speed, reducing detection risk during ascents.
Kunai
Maximize Kunai damage with Assassination Damage upgrades, which increase health depletion per throw. The Armor Piercing passive boosts penetration, while Everlast ensures Kunai retrieval without breakage.
Smoke Bomb
After unlocking, extend the Smoke Bomb’s duration with Enduring Haze for an additional 10 seconds of cover. The Widespread upgrade expands its area, obscuring more enemies from view.
Shuriken
Enhance Shuriken with Bank Shot, a passive that allows bouncing between targets with escalating damage per level. Triple Threat enables throwing three Shurikens for the cost of one, boosting stealth and combat options.
Shinobi Bell
Upgrade the Shinobi Bell with Golden Bell to heighten its distraction effect. Louder Chimes extends the radius by five meters, drawing more enemies with a single throw.
