How To Duel Enemies in Dynasty Warriors: Origins

In the whirlwind of battling countless enemies in Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a compelling gameplay element shines: duels. A returning feature from earlier titles, these intense one-on-one clashes offer a unique strategic layer to the game. Let's explore how they work.

What Are Duels in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Making their comeback after over two decades, duels, initially introduced in Dynasty Warriors 4, add a thrilling dimension to Dynasty Warriors: Origins. While not immediately available, the ability to duel unlocks in Chapter 2. However, not every enemy is worthy of a duel. You'll only have the option to challenge high-ranking and prominent enemy officers. When the opportunity arises, press R1 and L1 simultaneously to initiate the duel—but act quickly, as the window of opportunity is brief.

The duel unfolds in a small arena surrounded by soldiers, creating an intimate and focused battle. Unlike standard combat, a progress bar at the top of the screen tracks the duel's momentum for both you and your opponent. Each successful hit advances your bar, while your opponent's hits move theirs. The goal? Completely fill your progress bar by landing enough blows on your opponent. Your starting position in the duel isn't determined by health, but rather by your overall morale. A winning streak will give you a head start, while a losing streak puts you behind. A closely matched duel will see both bars evenly balanced.

Given the one-on-one nature of the duel, mastering your opponent's moves and attack patterns is crucial. Dodge, parry, and maintain a safe distance, especially when facing opponents using Battle Arts. Time is limited, but reckless aggression can be your downfall.

Victory in a duel inflicts massive damage on your opponent and significantly boosts your morale. Conversely, defeat results in substantial damage to you and a heavy morale penalty for your army—potentially disastrous in later stages of a battle. However, if neither side achieves a decisive victory, the duel ends without penalty. The battle resumes as normal, with no negative consequences for either party. Exceptions exist: some inescapable duels determine mission success or failure. Winning these ensures victory, while losing results in immediate mission failure. Therefore, while duels offer a chance to dramatically shift the tide of battle, underestimating your opponent can lead to devastating consequences.

That's the essence of dueling in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
