The Expanse: Osiris Reborn's Mass Effect Inspirations

by Gabriella Dec 04,2025

The striking resemblance of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn to Mass Effect has led many fans to dub it "Mass Effect: The Expanse." A quick look at the debut trailer and the game’s confirmed mechanics makes the comparison easy to understand. To their credit, the developers at Owlcat Games are openly embracing these influences.

In a conversation with IGN, creative director Alexander Mishulin and head of publishing Andrey Tsvetkov were transparent about the impact BioWare’s sci-fi series has had on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. However, they emphasize that the game is more than just a simple imitation.

For fans of The Expanse universe, Osiris Reborn is an intriguing new chapter, featuring several original cast members reprising their roles from the acclaimed Prime Video series. While Owlcat is keeping specific names under wraps for now, it’s clear that devotees missing the show since its conclusion in 2022 have something fresh to anticipate.

On a personal note, my own excitement for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn runs even deeper. As a longtime Mass Effect enthusiast and a fan of The Expanse, I also hold Owlcat’s Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader in high regard—not only as one of the standout Warhammer titles in recent memory but also as one of the finest cRPGs available.

Could Osiris Reborn be the perfect intersection of Mass Effect, The Expanse, and Warhammer 40,000? Keep reading to discover just how much The Expanse: Osiris Reborn mirrors the Mass Effect experience.
