Bungie, the studio behind Marathon, confirmed the game's launch date during its recent gameplay showcase. Here's everything revealed about the upcoming title and details about the Closed Alpha Playtest.
Marathon Arrives September 23
Return to Tau Ceti
Bungie, known for Destiny and Halo, presented an in-depth look at their new extraction shooter during an April 13 showcase. The competitive multiplayer experience features six teams of three players battling both each other and AI opponents to collect valuable resources and escape successfully.
This represents a significant evolution from the original trilogy. The first Marathon launched in 1994, followed by Marathon 2: Durandal (1995) and Marathon Infinity (1996) - all narrative-driven single-player experiences.
In a PlayStation Blog post, developers outlined their vision for the reboot. Narrative Lead Jonathan Goff emphasized maintaining Bungie's signature storytelling while adapting it for multiplayer.
"The original trilogy wove together narratives, events and characters to create an immersive world," Goff explained. "With Marathon, we're focused on creating living worlds where countless player-driven stories can emerge naturally."
Building a Narrative Ecosystem
The showcase revealed detailed economic systems, with all inventory items having designated values. Game Director Joe Ziegler clarified that accumulating wealth represents just one aspect of the experience.
"We're creating a 'story engine' where even unsuccessful runs can generate memorable moments," Ziegler told PC Gamer. "Some of gaming's most compelling survival narratives emerge from unexpected failures or strange occurrences."
Collaborating With the Community
Bungie has engaged players throughout development, incorporating feedback from early prototypes. Testers noted issues with map balance and spawn camping, prompting significant design changes.
"We implemented fresh starts for each match," Ziegler explained. "This creates fairer competition and clearer strategic planning opportunities as teams race for objectives."
Marathon Closed Alpha Testing
The limited alpha test runs from April 23 to May 4, restricted to U.S. and Canadian residents. Participants can choose between four character classes and three maps, including woodland and open terrain environments.
Interested players can register through Marathon's official Discord server. Invitations will be distributed selectively for this initial closed testing phase.
Marathon launches September 23, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. No additional playtests have been announced beyond the current North American alpha. Visit our coverage for continuing updates about this anticipated title.
