The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remake, rumored to be in development and slated for a 2025 release, has stirred excitement with an alleged leak of details surfacing online. According to Mp1st, the leak originated from a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio. Microsoft, when approached by IGN, chose not to comment on the matter.
Mp1st reports that Virtuos has utilized Unreal Engine 5 to completely remake Bethesda's beloved open-world RPG, suggesting a comprehensive overhaul rather than a simple remaster. The leaked details also hint at significant gameplay modifications, including enhancements to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and the user interface (HUD).
Reportedly, the Blocking mechanic has been revamped with influences from action games and Soulslikes, addressing the original's perceived monotony and frustration. Sneak mechanics have seen improvements with highlighted icons and revamped damage calculations. The effect of Stamina depletion leading to knockdowns is now harder to achieve, and the HUD has been redesigned for better clarity. Additionally, new hit reactions have been implemented for clearer feedback, and the Archery system has been updated for both first and third-person gameplay.
Rumors of an Oblivion remaster surfaced in 2023 during the FTC versus Microsoft trial over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, where a list of unannounced Bethesda projects was revealed. This list, dated July 2020, included plans for an "Oblivion Remaster" among other titles. However, many of the listed projects faced delays or cancellations. Notably, "Doom Year Zero" evolved into "Doom: The Dark Ages," set to launch this year, while "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle" was delayed until December 2024, and "The Elder Scrolls 6" remains far from its projected timeline.
The term "remaster" used in the Microsoft document for Oblivion raises questions about whether the project's scope has since expanded into a full remake. Bethesda's official announcement will clarify this, potentially shedding light on one of gaming's most anticipated secrets.
Regarding platform availability, Microsoft's current focus on multiplatform releases, coupled with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, suggests that the Oblivion remake might extend beyond traditional PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms. Leaker NateTheHate has speculated that the remake could launch in June, potentially aligning with the rumored release window of the Nintendo Switch 2.
Next week's Xbox Developer Direct will feature id Software's update on Doom: The Dark Ages, but it seems unlikely that the Oblivion remake will be revealed there. Instead, Windows Central’s Jez Corden has hinted at the announcement of a new game from a legendary Japanese IP, promising to delight fans with its rich history.
