New RPG Is Like The Witcher Meets Persona

by Simon Feb 21,2025

Rebel Wolves, a studio comprised of former CD Projekt Red developers, unveiled a cinematic trailer for their debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker. This open-world RPG, reminiscent of The Witcher, plunges players into a dark fantasy setting where morally gray choices abound and an outcast protagonist, Coen, takes center stage.

The trailer, primarily pre-rendered footage with brief gameplay glimpses, highlights the game's Witcher-esque atmosphere, enhanced by time management mechanics reminiscent of Persona. Initially announced as Dawnwalker in January 2024, the game's official reveal, including the extended cinematic trailer, occurred on January 13, 2025, courtesy of Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco. The trailer introduces the Dawnwalkers, powerful beings akin to vampires, and establishes Coen's transformation into one at the game's outset.

The Blood of Dawnwalker's Witcher Influences

The dark fantasy setting, monstrous creatures, and morally ambiguous choices—further emphasized by the tagline "the world needs what it fears"—strongly evoke the Witcher series, even without the involvement of former CDPR developers. Fans of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's "Blood and Wine" expansion, with its vampires and challenging decisions, will find the premise particularly compelling. The game's morality system allows Coen to either embrace his Dawnwalker powers to save his family or retain his humanity.

Persona-Inspired Time Management

Beyond its Witcher similarities, The Blood of Dawnwalker innovates with Persona-style time management. Every quest consumes time, creating a "narrative sandbox" where players' choices determine the story's progression. As Rebel Wolves co-founder and game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz explained, "There are multiple approaches to saving Coen’s family with no clear division between main and side quests; you decide on how you spend the time." This design choice fosters replayability, ensuring each playthrough feels unique. Completing all quests in a single playthrough is impossible.

Currently in development for PC and current-gen consoles (PlayStation and Xbox), The Blood of Dawnwalker is planned as the first in a trilogy, published by Bandai Namco. While a release date remains unannounced, given its 2022 development start and AAA budget, a 2027 release or later seems plausible. Rebel Wolves promises a gameplay reveal in Summer 2025.
