The Last of Us Part II PC Remaster: PSN Account Required, Sparking Controversy
The upcoming PC release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on April 3, 2025, includes a controversial requirement: a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. This decision, mirroring Sony's approach with other PC ports of formerly PlayStation-exclusive titles, is causing friction among potential players.
While bringing the acclaimed sequel to PC is a welcome move for many, the PSN account mandate is a sticking point. The Steam page clearly states this requirement, allowing players to link existing PSN accounts or create new ones. However, this echoes past controversies surrounding similar requirements for other Sony PC ports. The backlash was so significant for Helldivers 2 that Sony reversed course and removed the PSN requirement before it even launched.
Why the PSN Requirement? A Business Strategy?
While PSN accounts are understandable for games with multiplayer components (like Ghost of Tsushima), The Last of Us Part II is a single-player experience. The need for a PSN account is puzzling, seemingly designed to encourage wider adoption of Sony's services. While a valid business strategy, this approach risks alienating PC gamers, especially given previous negative reactions.
This requirement presents several hurdles. Although a basic PSN account is free, the extra step of account creation or linking is an inconvenience. Furthermore, PSN's global availability is not universal, potentially excluding some players entirely. This restriction feels particularly jarring given The Last of Us franchise's reputation for accessibility.
Release Date Reminder: April 3, 2025.
