Fantasy RPG World-Building: Interview with Goddess Order Developers

by Julian Feb 11,2025

This interview delves into the development of Goddess Order, an upcoming mobile action RPG from Pixel Tribe, the creators of Crusaders Quest. We spoke with Ilsun (Art Director) and Terron J. (Contents Director) to gain insight into their pixel art and world-building processes.

Pixel Tribe's Goddess Order: An Interview

Droid Gamers: What inspires your pixel sprites?

Ilsun: As Art Director, I oversee Goddess Order's visuals. Our high-quality pixel art aims for a console-like feel, emphasizing narrative. Inspiration draws from years of gaming and storytelling experiences. Pixel art is about nuanced expression through tiny units, making it less about specific references and more about the cumulative influence of our experiences. It’s a continuous process of observation and absorption from daily life. Collaboration is key; the initial characters, Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan, were born from solo work and evolved through team discussions, shaping the game's art style. We constantly collaborate with writers and designers, refining character concepts through conversation and iterative design.

Droid Gamers: How do you approach world-building in a fantasy RPG?

Terron J.: World-building in Goddess Order originates from our pixel art characters. Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan established the foundation for immersive gameplay. Their inherent characteristics, missions, and purposes guide the world's creation. The characters' stories organically unfolded, revealing narratives of growth and heroism, shaping the game's scenario and emphasizing the importance of manual controls.

Droid Gamers: How are combat styles and animations designed?

Terron J.: Goddess Order's combat features three characters using linked skills. Design involves defining unique roles for each character (e.g., powerful attacker, support healer) and strategically structuring battle formations. We prioritize unique advantages and streamlined controls.

Ilsun: Visually, we enhance combat through art, considering weapons, appearance, and movements to emphasize character concepts. Despite being 2D pixel art, characters utilize three-dimensional movements, enhancing visual impact. We use physical props to study movement for authenticity.

Terron J.: Finally, technical optimization is crucial for smooth mobile gameplay, ensuring consistent performance across devices without compromising cutscenes or immersion.

Droid Gamers: What's next for Goddess Order?

Ilsun: Goddess Order is a narrative-driven JRPG following the Lisbeth Knights. Post-launch, we plan to add activities like quests and treasure hunts, alongside continuous updates to chapter and origin stories. We also aim to introduce challenging advanced content with refined controls.
