Sony has announced the formation of a new PlayStation studio called teamLFG, and has given a sneak peek into their debut game. In a recent post on the PlayStation Blog, Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment's Studio Business Group, revealed that teamLFG was originally part of Bungie, the creators of Destiny and Marathon. They are currently working on an ambitious project that has Hulst very excited.
The name teamLFG stands for 'Looking For Group,' a term popular in online gaming communities, hinting at the studio's focus on social gaming. Their first game is described as a team-based action game that blends elements from fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life sims, and "frog-type games." It will be set in a new, mythic, science-fantasy universe characterized by a lighthearted and comedic tone.
"We are driven by a mission to create games where players can find friendship, community, and belonging," teamLFG stated. They aim to foster a sense of excitement among players when they log in and see their friends online, encouraging the creation of shared memories and legendary moments within the game. "We want our players to love remembering that one time where they pulled off That Play that changed the whole story of the match. As we say on the team – dat’s da good stuff," they added.
The studio plans to build immersive multiplayer worlds with games that players can learn, play, and master over countless hours. They intend to involve the community early on through access playtests, emphasizing the importance of reacting to player feedback not only before launch but also throughout the game's live service to keep the game and its community thriving for years.
teamLFG's incubation project was spun off from Bungie amid significant layoffs in 2023. Following Sony's acquisition, Bungie struggled to meet financial targets with Destiny 2, resulting in layoffs affecting around 100 employees in November 2023, followed by another 220 in 2024, which accounted for 17% of the studio's workforce. Many of these employees were then integrated into other parts of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and it was during this period that the incubation project was announced.
In other news, a former Bungie lawyer praised Sony's role in pushing through improvements to Destiny 2. Recently, Bungie fully revealed their extraction shooter Marathon and shared the roadmap for Destiny 2's future, while confirming there are no plans for Destiny 3 and that a spinoff project called Payback has been canceled.
