Free-to-play 3v3 shooter Spectre Divide is shutting down just six months after its September 2024 launch, mere weeks following its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release. Developer Mountaintop Studios will also cease operations.
Mountaintop CEO Nate Mitchell confirmed the shutdown in a social media statement, stating: "Despite our efforts, Season 1's performance fell short of sustaining both the game and our studio."

The studio initially saw promising numbers, attracting 400,000 players during launch week with peak concurrents reaching 10,000 across platforms. However, Mitchell explained: "Player retention and revenue couldn't cover operational costs. We exhausted all remaining capital attempting to sustain development."
The team explored multiple survival strategies including publisher partnerships, additional funding, and potential acquisitions - all ultimately unsuccessful. "The current gaming climate proved too challenging," Mitchell added.
Servers will remain operational for 30 days, with Season 1 purchases refunded. This announcement contradicts October 2024 assurances that Spectre Divide had "long-term funding" and wouldn't shut down.
IGN's August 2024 preview praised Spectre Divide's innovative Duality system, where players controlled paired characters. Its closure joins other recent live-service failures like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Concord.
