The video game industry has undergone significant transformation throughout 2024, with Bandai Namco actively navigating these changes. European CEO Arnaud Muller describes operating in an environment characterized by economic volatility and increasingly congested release schedules. In a recent discussion, Muller detailed both the risks and opportunities that publishers encounter when strategizing future game launches.

Despite Bandai Namco's robust financial performance this year—driven by Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and the anticipated DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO—Muller emphasized that the path forward remains challenging. While 2024 has been labeled a "stabilization period" following industry-wide workforce reductions and post-pandemic market expansion, he expressed concern about persistent issues in game development and release coordination.

Speaking with GameIndustry.biz, Muller explained that Bandai Namco employs a "balanced risk approach" when evaluating its game portfolio. This strategy considers investment scale, production capabilities relative to existing IP potential, and new intellectual property opportunities within specific market segments. However, Muller acknowledged that traditional notions of "safe investments" are shifting dramatically.

"Do secure opportunities still exist in today's market? Absolutely," Muller stated. "That said... introducing new intellectual property has grown increasingly complex." He noted that soaring development expenses and extended production cycles now require publishers to anticipate budget overruns and delays from the initial planning stages. Failure to account for these variables, Muller warned, "leads to unpleasant surprises."

The volatility of release timing compounds these challenges. Though 2025 promises major titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Avowed, and Ghost of Yōtei alongside a potential Switch 2 debut, Muller questioned whether these projects will meet their projected launch dates: "How many will actually release on schedule?... We face the same uncertainties as everyone else."

Muller identified strategic focus on specific genres and established franchises—such as the forthcoming Little Nightmares 3—as providing some stability. "We're confident that... our portfolio resonates with a dedicated audience that remains loyal to our intellectual properties and will continue supporting our releases," he explained.

While recognized franchises offer relative security, Muller cautioned against complacency. Player preferences continuously evolve, and previously successful formulas may not withstand shifting market dynamics. New intellectual properties face greater commercial vulnerability due to substantial development investments and intense market competition. "Little Nightmares 3... benefits from an established fanbase that will likely engage with the title regardless of whether Grand Theft Auto releases in 2025," Muller added.

As noted earlier, Muller characterized 2024 as an industry "stabilization phase." However, he outlined three critical components needed to "restore substantial market growth": favorable macroeconomic conditions, robust platform ecosystems with established user bases, and emerging markets with significant expansion potential including "Brazil, South America, India, and similar regions."

When questioned about potential benefits from Nintendo's anticipated Switch 2 console, Muller responded: "We maintain platform neutrality. Most of our titles release across all systems, and Nintendo's platforms consistently represent important channels for us... We'll allocate appropriate resources for any new hardware Nintendo introduces."

Despite these industry headwinds, Muller maintains an optimistic outlook. He believes that if the extensive lineup of games projected for 2025 reaches market, "then logically, I can't envision a scenario where the industry fails to expand next year."
