Warframe's Developer, Digital Extremes, Unveils Exciting Updates for Warframe and Soulframe at TennoCon 2024
Digital Extremes, creators of the popular free-to-play looter shooter Warframe, showcased significant updates for both Warframe and their upcoming fantasy MMO, Soulframe, at TennoCon 2024. This includes gameplay reveals, release timelines, and insightful comments from CEO Steve Sinclair regarding the current state of live-service games.
Warframe: 1999 - A Retro Sci-Fi Adventure
Warframe 1999, a new expansion, takes players on a journey to the infested city of Höllvania in a 1999 setting. The gameplay demo featured Arthur Nightingale, leader of the Hex, piloting the Atomicycle and battling proto-infested enemies. A surprising element: a 90s boy band encounter!
The expansion introduces a romance system using "Kinematic Instant Message," allowing players to build relationships with Hex members. Furthermore, Digital Extremes is collaborating with The Line animation studio on a short film to accompany the expansion's launch.
Warframe 1999 will be available on all platforms in Winter 2024.
Soulframe - A Deliberate Fantasy MMO Experience
The first Soulframe Devstream offered a detailed look at the game's open-world fantasy setting and melee-focused combat. Players take on the role of an Envoy, fighting to cleanse the Ode curse from Alca. The Warsong Prologue introduces the game's world and story. Players will utilize their Nightfold, a personal Orbiter, to manage their gear, interact with NPCs, and even pet their wolf mount.
The demo also showcased Ancestors, powerful spirit allies, and formidable enemies like Nimrod and Bromius. Soulframe is currently in a closed alpha phase (Soulframe Preludes) with plans for wider access this Fall.
Digital Extremes CEO on the Longevity of Live Service Games
CEO Steve Sinclair commented on the trend of large publishers prematurely abandoning live-service games due to initial performance concerns. He highlighted the importance of long-term commitment and community building, contrasting Warframe's success with the short lifespans of games like Anthem, SYNCED, and Crossfire X. Digital Extremes aims to avoid repeating past mistakes, evidenced by their continued work on Soulframe.
