Xbox Fans to Expect More Movie and TV Adaptations, Says Phil Spencer

by Lucy May 06,2025

Despite the disappointing performance of the TV adaptation of Halo, Microsoft remains undeterred in its pursuit of bringing its video game franchises to new media. Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft's gaming division, has expressed optimism about future adaptations in an interview with Variety. This comes as anticipation builds for the upcoming movie adaptation of Minecraft, featuring Jack Black, which could pave the way for further installments if successful.

Microsoft's foray into film and television adaptations isn't new. The highly successful Fallout series on Prime Video, which is already set for a second season, showcases the potential for Microsoft's properties in these mediums. However, the Halo TV series, despite its significant investment, was canceled after two seasons due to poor reception.

Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is learning from each project, including Halo and Fallout, which is boosting their confidence to explore more adaptations. "We’re learning and growing through this process, which is giving us more confidence that we should do more," Spencer remarked. He acknowledged that while some projects may not meet expectations, the overall experience is encouraging Microsoft to continue expanding into this space.

Looking ahead, the question arises about which Xbox game might be next in line for adaptation. In 2022, Netflix announced plans for a live-action film and an animated TV series based on Gears of War, though updates have been sparse, except for actor Dave Bautista's expressed interest in portraying Marcus Fenix.

Speculation abounds about which Microsoft-owned franchises might see the light of day on screen. Following the success of Fallout, could Prime Video be interested in adapting The Elder Scrolls or Skyrim into a TV series? However, with Amazon already investing in other fantasy projects like The Rings of Power and The Wheel of Time, their interest might be elsewhere.

Sony's successful Gran Turismo movie suggests that racing games can translate well to film. Could Microsoft follow suit with a Forza Horizon movie? With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft now holds the rights to popular franchises like Call of Duty and Warcraft. There's potential for a new Call of Duty movie or another attempt at a Warcraft adaptation, especially after previous projects with Netflix fell through, as noted by Jason Schreier in his book Play Nice.

On a lighter note, Microsoft's ownership of Crash Bandicoot could lead to a family-friendly animated movie or TV series, capitalizing on the success of similar adaptations like Mario and Sonic. Additionally, with Fable set for a reboot in 2026, an adaptation could be on the horizon.

Finally, could Microsoft give Halo another chance, this time with a big-budget movie? While the TV series didn't succeed, a fresh approach with a film might reignite interest in the franchise.

Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are also actively pursuing adaptations. Sony has seen success with the Uncharted movie, HBO's The Last of Us, and is preparing for a second season of Twisted Metal. They've also announced projects like a Helldivers 2 movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and an anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima. The God of War TV show is already slated for two seasons.

Nintendo, on the other hand, boasts the most successful video game adaptation to date with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with a sequel in development and a live-action The Legend of Zelda film on the way.
