Former Arkane co-creative director Harvey Smith added: "Beyond his professional genius, I'll always remember his razor-sharp wit that left us in stitches. Rest well, friend."
Pete Hines, former Bethesda marketing executive, shared: "Heartbroken by Viktor's passing. His ability to craft immersive worlds in Dishonored was extraordinary. Thank you for the countless hours of wonder you gave gamers worldwide."
A Legacy of Iconic Worlds
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, Antonov brought unique cultural perspectives to game development after moving to Paris and later joining Los Angeles' Xatrix Entertainment (later Gray Matter Studios) in the mid-90s.
At Valve, he created Half-Life 2's unforgettable City 17, blending architecture from Sofia, Belgrade and St. Petersburg. "I sought to capture that distinctive Eastern European atmosphere," Antonov once explained.
His later work at Arkane Studios helped define Dishonored's distinctive Dunwall setting. Beyond gaming, Antonov contributed to animated features Renaissance and The Prodigies, and worked with indie studio Darewise Entertainment.
In a 2017 Reddit AMA, Antonov reflected on his unconventional career path: "I began in transportation design before switching to advertising, but both fields felt creatively stifling. Gaming offered freedom I couldn't find elsewhere - my first project was the wonderfully absurd Redneck Rampage before moving to more serious works."
Antonov's final public appearance came in Valve's Half-Life 2 anniversary documentary, where he revisited the creative process behind his groundbreaking designs. His visionary aesthetic continues influencing game worlds today.
