Baldur's Gate 3 actor and performance director Aliona Baranova has raised important questions about why big-screen adaptations frequently bypass talented in-game performers during casting.

A Missed Opportunity?

During a Tampa Bay Comic Convention panel moderated by Collider's Maggie Lovitt, Baranova expressed disappointment: "It's unfortunate that video game audiences' dedication isn't being recognized in screen adaptations. Players show incredible passion...yet filmmakers and studios currently overlook this connection."

Her comments highlight a growing concern - game actors frequently contribute far more than voice work, often providing motion capture performances and serving as the visual reference for beloved characters.

The Evidence Speaks

"Our gaming community consistently supports screen adaptations," noted Baranova, whose credits include Cyberpunk 2077, Lies of P, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. "Why hasn't Hollywood embraced this yet?"

She referenced HBO's The Last of Us adaptation as a positive example, where original actors Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker appeared in new roles. The result? "Ashley Johnson became IMDb's top search after the show premiered."

Baranova challenged Hollywood's approach: "Why isn't this happening more? Why wasn't Doug Cockle involved in The Witcher series? Game actors deserve consideration for adaptations - even animated projects like Arcane."

Cockle, the original Geralt voice actor, appeared in Netflix's Witcher animated film but not the live-action series starring Henry Cavill.

A Misunderstood Industry

Despite video game performers' extensive training backgrounds, Baranova believes Hollywood still perceives them narrowly: "Many of us trained at prestigious UK drama schools...yet executives seem unaware of our versatility."

She emphasized the disconnect: "Studios underestimate gaming fans' enthusiasm to support performers they love. This oversight represents wasted potential."

The current golden age of game adaptations - featuring successes like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Last of Us series - suggests perfect timing for Hollywood to reconsider its casting approaches.

With numerous adaptations in development, this conversation arrives at a pivotal moment for the industry.
