"Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 Devs Reject Live Service Model After 'FOMO' Event Backlash"

The developers and publishers of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model following backlash from the community regarding events that some felt promoted "FOMO," or the fear of missing out. FOMO is a strategy commonly employed by live service game developers to spur players into quick engagement and expenditure on virtual items that are available for a limited time, with the implication that missing the window means missing out forever.

This approach is often criticized for fostering an unhealthy dynamic between video games and their player base. In 2021, new research commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted how many games utilize "psychological nudges" to encourage the purchase of loot boxes, often leveraging the fear of missing out on limited-time items or special offers. While Space Marine 2 does not feature loot boxes, it introduced community events as a method for players to unlock exclusive cosmetics, sparking the aforementioned backlash and leading some to label the game as adopting live service elements.

In response to the criticism, Space Marine 2's publisher, Focus Entertainment, and developer, Saber Interactive, acknowledged the "cold feedback" received since the introduction of these events. They addressed concerns about FOMO in a public statement, assuring players that items made available during these events would be re-released for everyone at a later date. The companies emphasized that the intention behind the community events was to allow dedicated players to unlock items early, not to create frustration or stress.

Focus Entertainment also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the current system and announced efforts to simplify the process of unlocking items. As a gesture of goodwill, they are offering the emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to Space Marine 2. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, set to conclude on March 3, and was originally only obtainable by achieving a victory with each of the six classes in Operations Mode before the event's end.

Currently, players are eagerly awaiting the 7.0 update for Space Marine 2, which promises to introduce a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Last month, Focus and Saber addressed growing discontent over content updates, providing insights into what players can expect from the game in the coming months.

Space Marine 2 achieved a record-breaking launch late last year, selling 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game to date.
