In early April, Nintendo Switch 2 enthusiasts spotted references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on the console's official information pages, which were later removed. Nintendo has now clarified VRR functionality details for the upcoming system.
In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo admitted the initial VRR details were inaccurate: "Nintendo Switch 2 will only support VRR in handheld mode. We regret the error in our previously published information."
The company declined to comment on potential VRR support for docked mode through future updates, stating they have "no announcements regarding this matter."
This means while handheld players will enjoy VRR benefits, current TV users won't have access to this feature upon launch.
The clarification follows initial confusion when VRR mentions first appeared then vanished across multiple Nintendo sites, as documented by Digital Foundry's Oliver Mackenzie.
Though disappointing for TV players, post-launch VRR support remains possible - Sony similarly added VRR to PS5 through later updates.
Separately, Nintendo revealed a lineup of Switch 2-enhanced games including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser assures sufficient holiday stock availability.
