Originally conceived as a passion project by solo developer Yang Bing, Lost Soul Aside has evolved significantly. It is now a major title under Sony's China Hero Project, with Bing serving as the founder and CEO of the Shanghai-based studio, Ultizero Games. The game's journey from a solo creator's vision to its reveal at Sony's State of Play broadcast has generated considerable excitement. Some have likened Lost Soul Aside to a thrilling blend of Final Fantasy characters and Devil May Cry combat, a sentiment that has been evident since Yang Bing's initial reveal video went viral in 2016.
The game features a protagonist named Kesar, who wields a versatile, shape-shifting weapon that allows players to switch playstyles. Kesar is accompanied by a dragon-like companion, Arena, who can summon abilities to assist in battles. Drawing inspiration from its predecessors, Lost Soul Aside focuses on aerial dodging, precise timing, combos, and countering, all set within large-scale boss fights. The game's narrative takes players across multiple dimensions, blending a sci-fi premise with contemporary aesthetics. Although the story's direction remains somewhat enigmatic based on trailers, Yang Bing describes Kesar's journey as one of "redemption and discovery."
IGN recently had the opportunity to delve deeper into the game's development with Yang Bing, exploring the long and winding road to its launch.
